MIsagh Bahadoran (9) of the Philippine Azkals celebrates his game-tying goal against Indonesia, Tuesday.
Two games into their 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup campaign, the Philippine Azkals may have just found some added motivation, as the Philippines rises seven spots to 117th in the latest FIFA World Rankings.
Coming from 124th in the world just a month ago, the Azkals' latest ranking is their second highest, behind only their 115th-ranking last May.
The siginificant rise can most likely be credited to the Pinoy side's 1-0 international friendly win over Kyrgyztsan, who were then ranked at 99th in the world. Kyrgyzstan has since taken a massive drop down to 124th in the recent world rankings.
The Azkals remain at the top of the Southeast Asian ladder, while they break into the top-ten in the AFC, coming just eight spots behind ninth-place Jordan, with a 109 world rank.
So far this November, the Azkals have recorded a win over Kyrgyzstan, and then escaped with draws against Singapore and Indonesia in the AFF Suzuki Cup group stages. The Pinoy side will face tournament favorites Thailand, and will need nothing short of three points to be able to keep their chances of advancing alive.
A win against Thailand and a strong showing in the AFF Suzuki Cup semis should push the Azkals' ranking even more.
For now however, the national team must focus on picking up a win, Friday evening.
