Real Madrid, which has a game in hand, can open a four-point gap if it beats Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium later on Sunday.
Sevilla can move three points in front of Barcelona if it wins at Espanyol.
Messi sent a perfect through ball to Suarez inside the area and the striker found the low right corner as the goalkeeper charged from the net.
Barcelona should have been awarded an earlier equalizer when the officiating crew failed to see a ball that clearly crossed the goal line before being cleared by a defender.
