Ceres Negros FC makes history by advancing into the 2017 AFC Cup Zonal Finals
For the first time in AFC Cup history, a Filipino club advances to the Zonal Finals, as Bacolod-based Ceres Negros FC took down 2015 AFC Cup champions Johor Darul T'azim of Malaysia, 2-1 in the second leg of the ASEAN Zonal Semifinals, Wednesday evening at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod.
Kota Kawase scored first for the home side in the 26th minute, but the visiting Malaysian side was able to pull even in the 65th minute, courtesy of a conversion from Gabriel Miguel Guerra.
Much like in the Global Cebu-Home United matchup, it was an injury time goal that spelled the difference, but this time around it was in favor of the Filipino side, as Fernando Rodriguez sank a penalty three minutes after regulation to put Ceres Negros back on top and eventually through to the Zonal Finals.
Tied 4-4 on aggregate, the Away Goals rule gave the Pinoy side the assist, as they managed to score two away goals as compared to JDT's one.
Up next for The Busmen are Singapore's Home United, who sent Global Cebu FC packing earlier this week.
The Zonal Finals begin in August.
