Each member of ABS-CBN FC grinned from ear-to-ear as they accepted the champions’ trophy at the Adobo Cup 10 last June 10 at the McKinley Hill Stadium.
“It’s my first time joining the Adobo Cup and super proud ako sa team,” said Best Midfielder and MVP Daniel Matsunaga. “Football is all about teamwork and we were able to do it and become a champion.”
ABS-CBN Lighting Director Gary Gardoce took home the award for Best Defender for the second year in a row, while singer and former PBB housemate Bailey May scored a total of 15 goals to earn the Golden Boot award.
The Adobo Cup is an annual one-day football tournament where leading advertising agencies and media companies can compete outside the boardroom.
“It’s a great gathering of the industry,” said Adobo Cup founder Angel Guerrero. “Everyone’s here to have fun but in a way, it’s a little serious because they trained for it and prepared their own uniforms for it.”
The friendly competition carried on from sunny afternoon to rainy dusk, to cool evening—with free-flowing ice cream, chips, barbecue and beer for all.
ABS-CBN fielded two teams this year: ABS-CBN FC and Kapamilya United. Each mixed team was made up of employees from different departments, from motion graphics to digital media, legal counsel to sports broadcasting, business intelligence to art department, planning and design to Star Magic.

“Halos three months na kaming sama-sama,” shared Mark Rivera of ABS-CBN FC. “Sumali na rin kami ng ibang tournament kagaya ng CFL tapos may training kami once a week. So prepared kami sa tournament na ito.”
Tiptip Fucoy, an actor who has been playing for ABS-CBN in the Adobo Cup for the past four years, added: “Masaya [dito], lalo na ‘yung camaraderie ng grupo. Masaya ‘yung every tournament na sinasalihan namin.”

After a whole day of excitement, Kapamilya United finished in fourth place. Third place went to content company Labor of Love, while second prize went to Publicis.
And of course, ABS-CBN FC took home the gold! Apart from the coveted trophy and bragging rights, ABS-CBN FC also received a personalized beer freezer from Beer Below Zero.
Meanwhile, Matsunaga held his MVP and Best Defender trophies high as he made a promise to return to the team next year.
“I’m so happy for our team,” said Matsunaga. “I’ll be back.”
