TAGUM CITY, DAVAO DEL NORTE- FC Meralco Manila may have a perfect record with five wins from five matches in the Philippines Football League. But there are many reasons to regard Wednesday's midweek tiff versus the Aguilas as a tricky encounter.
The game will kick off at 4pm on Wednesday June 21 at the Davao Del Norte Sports Complex.
The Sparks are in the middle of an arduous stretch of three matches in eight days. Last Saturday Manila emerged 2-0 winners against rivals Kaya Makati in the University of Makati. This game also represents their longest road trip of the campaign. The Sparks will then host Stallion Laguna on Saturday in Rizal Memorial.
While Davao is still winless this season, they did pick up an additional point in the standings when they held Laguna to a goalless draw in Biñan on Sunday. The clean sheet will give Davao coach Gary Phillips some hope after the team absorbed setbacks against Kaya and JPV Marikina.
This is the second meeting for Davao and Manila this year. In Manila's second home game the Sparks came out on top 2-0 thanks to goals from Curt Dizon and James Younghusband.
Younghusband is still sidelined with a knee injury sustained in the Azkals' friendly loss to China two weeks ago. But the home team also has players in sick bay with usual starters Jason Cordova, Nico Macapal and Brad McDonald all hobbled.
The Sparks may be the away team but in the pre match press conference both coach Aris Caslib and player representative both spoke about the great affinity the side has with Mindanao. FC Meralco Manila has done several football outreaches in places like Zamboanga and Tawi Tawi over the years in conjunction with the Football for Peace program of the Philippine Marine Corps.
On Tuesday morning the team visited the Tagum City hall where they were warmly greeted by city Vice Mayor Geterito Gementiza and the wife of the Honorable Mayor, Allan Rellon, Mrs. Yhora Mae Rellon.
Should a live stream be made available for the match, FC Meralco Manila will inform all of its fans on its social media accounts, @FCMeralcoManila on Twitter and FC Meralco Manila on Facebook.
