Filipino club Global Cebu FC broke through into the 2017 RHB Singapore Cup Quarterfinals after outlasting Singapore's Geylang International, 3-2 on penalties, Wednesday evening at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.
It was the home team that got on the board first, with Yuki Ichigawa hitting in the 15-minute mark. Global responded immediately, with Darryl Roberts scoring a minute later.
The Trinidadian striker would score once more in the first half, putting Global ahead 39 minutes in via a penalty kick, but Geylang International's Victor Ortega found the equalizer just before halftime.
Roberts completed his hat trick to kick off the second half, giving the visitors the lead once again in the 53rd minute.
75 minutes in, it appeared as if Global were ready to pull away after a fourth goal from OJ Clarino, but the home side had one more rally left in them.
In the 83rd minute, a penalty was awarded to Geylang International, allowing Gabriel Quak to pull one back.
In the final minute of regulation, Ricardo Sendra saved the match for the home team with an equalizer to force added extra time.
With nobody managing to find the back of the net during the extension period, the match went into a shootout.
In the penalties, it was Global keeper Patrick Deyto who came up big, denying attempts from Faritz Hameed and Sendra and helping secure the 3-2 tally.
"The People's Club" will take on Cambodian club Boeung Ket Angkor in the quarters. They remain as the lone Pinoy club in the tournament, with Ceres Negros FC being booted out in the preliminary round Tuesday.
