The Philippine football teams went two-for-two on the opening day of the 2017 Southeast Asian Games football tournament, with the men's team defeating Cambodia, 2-0, while the women's team bested hosts Malaysia, 2-1, Tuesday evening in Kuala Lumpur.
After a slow start at the Selayang Municipal Council Stadium, the Philippine men's team found their groove in the second half of action, with FEU standout Reymart Cubon scoring the Pinoys' first goal of the match, making good on a corner from reigning UAAP MVP and Ateneo star Jarvey Gayoso.
With less than ten minutes left in regulation, JPV Marikina's Kouichi Belgira provided the finishing touches with a perfect free kick that sailed past the Cambodian wall and straight into the back of the net.
Man of the Match honors went to keeper RJ Joyel of FEU, who anchored the Philippine defense all match long, including a save in stoppage time that ensured the shutout of Cambodia.
The Pinoys earn three important points as they try to reign supreme in Group B.
Up next for the Philippine men's team will be a showdown with Indonesia at the Shah Alam Stadium on Thursday, August 17th at 8:45 PM.
Over at the UiTM Stadium, Hiraya FC's Patrice Impelido scored just before halftime to give the Filipinas an early advantage.
Malaysia responded early in the second half, with Dadree Rofinus finding the equalizer in the 54th minute of action.
The final say would come from the Philippines however, as former Ateneo striker Cam Rodriguez made a triumphant return to the National Team, scoring the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute to secure the win for the Philippine side.
The Philippine women's team currently share the top spot of the standings with Thailand, both with three points.
Up next for the Filipinas will be a matchup against Vietnam at the UM Arena Stadium on Thursday, August 17th at 4:00 PM.
