A late goal from Senegalese forward Pape Omar Faye proved to be the difference, as Filipino club Global Cebu FC came up short in their 2018 AFC Cup opener against Vietnamese club FLC Than Hoa at the My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi, Saturday.
A tightly contested first half saw neither side give up any goals, leading to a scoreless stalemate at halftime.
Fortune favored the home team in the 74th minute, as Faye turned a cross from Nguyen Xuan Thanh into a perfectly-placed header that sailed past Global keeper Patrick Deyto and into the back of the net.
The Pinoy side couldn’t come up with an equalizer as Than Hoa held on for the victory.
The win propels Than Hoa to the top of the Group G standings, with a win and three points.
Global currently slides to the bottom with one loss.
Yet to see action in Group G are Bali United and Yangon United. The two sides kick off their 2018 AFC Cup campaigns against each other on Wednesday, February 13th.
Global on the other hand, will get the chance to bounce back later this month when they host Bali United at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Tuesday, February 27th.
The other Pinoy club in the tournament, inaugural PFL champions Ceres Negros FC, begin their 2018 AFC Cup campaign on Wednesday, February 13th as well when they take on Cambodian side Boeung Ket Angkor in Group F action at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod.
