Last-minute penalty lifts Global Cebu past Yangon United
Rufo Sanchez hit the go-ahead penalty kick to lift Global Cebu FC past Yangon United in AFC Cup 2018 action.

A last-minute penalty kick from Rufo Sanchez sealed the deal for Filipino club Global Cebu FC as they took down top-seeded Yangon United, 2-1, in 2018 AFC Cup Group G action, Tuesday evening at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Looking for their first win in the tournament, Global FC managed to hold group leaders Yangon scoreless in the first half while, getting off a couple of good attempts on goal themselves.

Late in the second half, Global Cebu’s Darryl Roberts broke the deadlock after heading in a well-timed free kick from Dominic Del Rosario in the 79th minute.

The Global lead didn’t last too long however, as ten minutes later, Mg Mg Lwin capitalized on a defensive miscue to pull Yangon even.

With only four minutes of extra time added, it appeared that Global would come away with yet another draw at home, but a stroke of luck hit in the final minute, as the visiting Yangon United side gave up a last-minute foul inside the box, awarding the home side a penalty attempt.

In the final play of the match, Rufo blasted the penalty kick past keeper Sann Sat Naing for the win.

"What's important for us is we win, we get the three points to get back the confidence of the players, and also for my two strikers, they unlocked their scoring already," said Global Cebu FC head coach Marjo Allado following the thrilling win. "For the past three games, they've only had attempts but they cannot put the ball in the net. Happy tonight that we get the three points and the two strikers scored."

"As I said after the last game, we had a mountain to climb, but it's not impossible. Everything is possible in football, and we knew tonight, coming into the game, that we had to get the three points, that was necessary." added Roberts. "Up until the last five minutes of the game, we kept pushing for that goal. A bit unlucky that we conceded, but at the end of the night, the three points were necessary and important for our progress until the next game, and hopefully we can take this step forward and continue on a victorious run."

Global Cebu FC scores their first win of the Group Stages, improving to one win, one draw, and two losses for four points.

Group leaders Yangon United drop their first match of the Group Stages as they fall to three wins and one loss for nine points.

It'll be a while for Global Cebu FC before they take to the pitch for AFC Cup action, as they take on FLC Than Hoa at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium on April 11th.
