The Philippine Azkals take on Fiji in an International Friendly match, serving as a tuneup for their 2019 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers match against Tajikistan.
The Philippine Azkals make their long-awaited return to the pitch for the first time in 2018 as they take on Fiji in an International Friendly Match, Thursday evening at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
The match will serve as an important tune-up match for the Azkals’ final 2019 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers match against Tajikistan on Tuesday, March 27th.
A win over Tajikistan will prove historic as it will send the Philippines to the AFC Asian Cup tournament for the first time in history.
And while the match on Tuesday remains the more valuable encounter given the circumstances and what’s at stake, the match against Fiji will be a gauge to see where the National Team stands.
“The game tomorrow is important for us to try to do, kind of, the things that we want to do against Tajikistan,” said Azkals head coach Thomas Dooley.
“As coach mentioned, this will be a good test for us, good preparation for the big one on the 27th.” Azkals team captain Phil Younghusband added.
The Azkals will be with the returning Javier Patiño, who missed the last three AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers matches with a knee injury. They will however be missing the services of Amani Aguinaldo and Stephan Palla due to injuries while star keeper Neil Etheridge has been ruled unavailable as well. Starting in Etheridge’s place will be Fil-Danish Michael Falkesgaard.
This will be the first time that the Philippines will face 168th-ranked Fiji.
