Filipino football club Ceres Negros FC edged out Myanmar’s Yangon United 6-5 on aggregate, Wednesday evening at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar, to advance to the 2018 AFC Cup ASEAN Zonal Semifinals.
After an important 4-2 victory in the first leg of their ASEAN Zonal Semifinals, Ceres Negros did enough in the second leg to survive and move on to the next round.
With their backs against the wall, home team Yangon United looked to cover some ground early, scoring in just the second minute courtesy of Kosuke Uchida.
It didn’t take long for Manny Ott to equalize, as he converted in the eighth minute to keep Ceres Negros ahead on the aggregate score.
Spanish star striker Bienve Marañon gave the Pinoy club a bit of cushion in the 78th minute after hitting his third goal in the last two matches to put the reigning PFL champions ahead, 6-3 on aggregate.
With one final push, Yangon United scored twice in a span of four minutes, with Aee Soe finding the match equalizer in the 83rd minute, while Sekou Sylla scored off a penalty in the 87th minute.
While Yangon United ended up winning the second leg, it wasn’t enough on aggregate as the Pinoy side secured their return trip to the ASEAN Zonal Finals.
For the second straight year, they’ll be taking on Singaporean side Home United in the two-legged Final series.
In last year’s tournament, Ceres Negros booted out Home United 3-2 on aggregate.
