Azkals announce Terry Butcher as new head coach
The Philippine Azkals will be under new management as they prepare for the 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup and the 2019 AFC Asian Cup
The Philippine Men's National Football team has announced the appointment of former English skipper Terry Butcher as the Azkals' new head coach.
The coaching change comes just months after the Azkals achieved arguably their biggest victory, qualifying for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup with a win over Tajikistan at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila.
Butcher will be replacing Thomas Dooley, who served as the Azkals' mentor from 2014 to 2018.
An experienced manager and former player with a long and storied career, Butcher represented the English national team from 1980 to 1990, which included 77 caps and three World Cup appearances.
In 1990, Butcher began his managing career, which lasted until 2015, last handling Newport County AFC.
More new names will be joining Butcher on the Azkals coaching staff, as former player Chris Greatwich will be coming on board as a coaching assistant, while Steve Marcells was named as the goalkeeping coach.
Ireland's Scott Cooper will also be joining the Azkals as the team's Senior Football Adviser.
Cooper is coming off a stint as Thai club Police Tero's manager.
The changes come in time for the Azkals' preparations for the upcoming AFF Suzuki Cup later this year, and the AFC Asian Cup in January of 2019.
