It was a win and a loss for Philippine football over the weekend, as two national teams embarked on respective AFF tournaments in Indonesia.
The U-19 Philippine Men's National Team scored a massive opening day win, as they took down Singapore, 2-1 at the Gelora Joko Samudio Stadium in Gresik to begin their 2018 AFF U-19 Championships.
Incoming University of the Philippines sophomore Fidel Tacardon, who was coming off a fantastic Rookie of the Year campaign and a UAAP championship with the Fighting Maroons, stole the spotlight as he scored twice to lead the Philippines to an opening day win.
Tacardon connected in the 19th minute, and then broke a deadlock in injury time to send the Philippines to the top of Group A, early.
Up next for the Pinoy side will be a matchup with Vietnam on Tuesday, July 3rd.
The women's side on the other hand, absorbed a 0-4 loss to Myanmar at the Jakabaring Stadium in Palembang to begin their 2018 AFF Women's Championship campaign.
Four different players wound up scoring for Myanmar, overpowering the Pinay side and sending them to the bottom of Group B.
The Women's National Team will get a chance to bounce back when they take on Singapore, also on Tuesday, July 3rd.
