Good start to the 2018 Suzuki Cup for the Philippine AzkalsIA late goal from Patrick Reichelt proved to be the difference as the Philippine Azkals edged out Singapore, 1-0, Tuesday evening at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod to open their AFF Suzuki Cup campaign in spectacular fashion.
A tight first half of action between the two sides resulted in a scoreless slate at halftime.
It took until the 78th minute for the scoreboard to be altered, as a James Younghusband header found its way to Reichelt, who weaved past the Singaporean defenses to get the conversion.
With five minutes of added time, Singapore tried desperately to pull even, to no avail.
"The feeling is amazing, getting the game winner in the opening game," said Reichelt after the match.
The Azkals get their first three points of the tournament as they try to hold their own against the so-called "Group of Death" alongside Thailand, Indonesia, and Timor Leste.
It was also a winning debut for new head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, who was introduced just a couple of weeks ago.
Up next for the Azkals will be an away match against Timor Leste on November 17th in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
