San Beda get an opening day win over Lyceum in NCAA Season 94 Men's Football
Last season's finalists, Arellano, and perennial contender San Beda kicked off NCAA Season 94 football with two contrasting wins last Sunday, December 9 at the PFF Artificial Turf Pitch in Carmona, Cavite.
Red Lions cruised to a 3-0 win over the Lyceum Pirates. SEA Games veteran Nimrod Balabat opened the scoring just before the half, easing the ball past the Pirates keeper from the right flank.
Second half goals from JR Suba and Reinhard Colasito completed the decisive victory. It was the seniors debut of Suba, the San Beda high school sensation from Tarlac who also assisted on the first goal.
The Arellano Chiefs, runners-up last year to CSB, dominated the Mapua Cardinals in terms of possession, territory and chances, but could only win 1-0.
U22 national team player Roberto Corsame supplied the only goal in the first half, using his pace to sprint past the Cardinal defense and slip the ball beyond the keeper.
In the first game of the day defending champs College of Saint Benilde were held to a 1-1 draw by Perpetual Help.
Captain Vince Lovitos struck in the 27th minute for the Blazers. 18 minutes from time John Bernard Delariarte equalized for the Altas, giving them a precious point.
In the other game that day Emilio Aguinaldo College subdued debutantes Letran 4-0.
Kenz Mark Olaer put the Generals in front two minutes after half time. The Knights' defense weathered several attacks before the floodgates opened, with Marvin Lianza striking in the 87th minute and Jonathan Muñoz and Olaer scoring again in stoppage time.
This is Letran's first season back in seniors football after only recently returning to the juniors division.
Action in the juniors category begins on Saturday, December 15, also in the PFF pitch in the San Lazaro Leisure Park. Benilde collides with Lyceum at the 8:00 am kickoff, followed by Arellano taking on EAC. Then after that Letran's juniors meet the Perpetual Help high school squad.
The following day the seniors are back in action, with Mapua and EAC tangling at 8:00 am followed by a mouthwatering clash between the Red Lions and the Chiefs.
In the afternoon Perpetual takes on Letran, then EAC squares off with Benilde.
