As the Philippine Men's National Basketball Team wraps up their campaign in the on-going 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup in China, the Philippine Men's National Football Team is set to begin their journey to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
They look to begin their campain on a high note when they face Syria on Thursday, September 5th at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod to open the 2nd Round of the Qualification Tournament.
Returning to the pitch for official competition for the first time since their historic AFC Asian Cup stint back in January, the Azkals immediately find themselves up against some tough competition as they take on a Syria squad that is the second-highest ranked in Group A, and ranked 85th in the world.
There isn't much history between the two sides, having only crossed paths three times, with Syria winning all three matches.
The Pinoys will hope to break that streak as they parade a mix of veterans and fresh new faces for this leg of the World Cup Qualifiers.
The match kicks off a double-round robin format for the Group Stages that will run until June of 2020. The Philippines, who will also be playing China PR, The Maldives, and Guam, will look to finish at the top of the group or become one of the four-best runners up to be able to advance into the third round of the qualifying tourney.
Kickoff in Bacolod will be at 7:30 PM.
