A first half goal spelled the difference as the Philippine Men's National Football Team fell to Syria, 1-0 in their second meeting in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup Joint Qualifiers, Tuesday at the Rashid Stadium in Dubai, UAE.
The Azkals were able to hold their own on the defensive end against the top-seeded team in Group A, but could not prevent a 23rd minute strike from Ward Alslamh who found a way to escape the Pinoy defenders for an open conversion.
Defense was better for the Pinoy side in the second half, as they were able to prevent the high-scoring Syrians from doubling up, being the first team to hold the them to just one conversion in the second round of the qualifiers.
Unfortunately, the Azkals could not capitalize on their opportunities and could not come up with an equalizer.
With the win, Syria improves to five wins in as many matches for 15 points, while the Azkals absorb their second loss in the tournament, again at the hands of Syria, to fall to one two wins, 1 draw, and 2 losses for seven points. They drop back down to 3rd place in Group A.
The Azkals will have quite some time to get back to the drawing board as their next World Cup qualifiers assignment won't be until March 26th of the next year, when they host Guam at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod.
