Filipino football club Ceres Negros FC survived Myanmar-based club Shan United FC 3-2, Tuesday evening at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium to advance to the Preliminary Round 2 of the 2019 AFC Champions League Group Stage.
It didn’t take long for the Pinoy side to take control of the match, as Robert Lopez Mendy put the Busmen ahead in just the 5th minute.
Star striker Bienve Marañon doubled the Ceres Negros lead with in the 41st minute.
The visitors tried to make things interesting in the second half, as Shan United pulled one back courtesy of a Zin Min Tun header in the 73rd minute.
OJ Porteria responded by restoring the home side’s two-goal advantage with a conversion inside the box in the 79th minute.
Things began to get a bit tense in the final ten minutes of the match as Shan United, playing with a heightened sense of urgency, began to get a little too physical.
The aggression paid off for Shan United, as Djawa Maximin scored easily in the 87th minute to make it 3-2 and once again put the pressure on Ceres Negros.
With four minutes of added time, Shan United desperately searched for the equalizer, but Ceres Negros was able to hold on for the win.
With the victory, Ceres Negros moves on to face Thailand’s Port FC on January 21st at the PAT Stadium in Bangkok. The winner of that match advances to the Playoff Round to face FC Tokyo at the Ajinomoto Stadium.
