UAAP Season 77 will take a short break to give way for Pope Francis' visit.
Action in the 77th UAAP will take a short break to give way for the visit of Pope Francis in the country on January 15-19.
Men’s and women’s volleyball as well as juniors basketball games will be cleared for the duration of the five-day Papal visit, according to UAAP secretary-treasurer Rod Roque of season host University of the East.
The last four playdates of the first round eliminations of volleyball will resume starting January 4 after the holiday break. Defending women’s champion Ateneo Lady Eagles and archrival La Salle Lady Spikers will meet in the much-anticipated match on January 11 to cap the first round of action.
Volleyball’s second round schedule is yet to be determined.
High school basketball will return to action on January 7 at the Blue Eagle gym. Games will continue on the 10th and 14th before a one week break. Matches will resume on January 21.
Malacanang has proclaimed earlier that January 15, 16 and 19 are special non-working holidays in line of the Pope’s visit.
UAAP, with most of its members being Catholic institutions including the Jesuit-run Ateneo de Manila, are one with the country in welcoming the Pontiff’s stop in the Philippines. University of Sto. Tomas will host a meeting with the Pope, religious leaders and young Filipinos.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio from Argentina, is the first Jesuit and South American Pontiff in history.
