Adamson wins 49th straight
Adamson University opened its campaign in the UAAP 77 softball tournament with its 49th consecutive victory.

For the past four years, Adamson University has dominated the Softball tournament of the UAAP. However, due to the graduation of key players like Rizza Bernardino, Elvie Entrina, Julie Muyco, Luzviminda Embudo and Carol Banay, the challenge of defending their throne for a fifth straight year will be harder than ever.

Last Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at the historic Rizal Memorial Baseball Field, the Lady Falcons began their title defense with a lopsided 11-1 victory over the University of Sto. Tomas. The game was ended in the fourth inning as the mercy rule was applied, awarding Adamson its first victory for UAAP Season 77 and 49th  straight win in the league, dating back to 2011.

Despite the one-sided affair, Lady Falcons Head Coach Anna Santiago stressed that they are not thinking about completing a ‘Five-peat’ but rather taking a more humble approach this season.

"Hindi muna ako nag-eexpect. One game at a time muna. Yun lang muna ang concentration namin."

"From last year, anim ang nawala sa amin (Including rookie Kimberly Amiado), yung positioning ng team medyo na rambol. Malaking adjustment sa amin."

"Hindi na siya ganun ka powerful like last year."

But, Adamson still started out the game hot, with veterans Queeny Sabobo, Annalie Benjamen, Angelie Ursabia and rookie Florabele Fabiania scoring the first four runs for the Lady Falcons.

Things got even better for the defending champions in the second inning as they registered seven more runs including a home run by Sabobo.

Benjamen, the reigning MVP of the league, was excellent on the mound, tallying six strikeouts for the game.

"Based on the result, lalaban pa rin kami," said Sanitago, who is coaching her tenth season for Adamson.

The former Youth National Team Player also described what she thinks about the competition in the league this season.

"Ako tingin ko, lahat, may laban. It’s good for the tournament. Lahat ii-step up nag le-level up ang play. Lahat ng team malakas. Wala kaming easy na kalaban."

Meanwhile, the University of the East beat Ateneo de Manila University, 7-4 while the University of the Philippines scored a 5-2 victory over De La Salle University.

The UAAP Season 77 Softball tournament resumes on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium with the following schedule:

8:00 A.M. – NU (1-0) vs. UE (1-1)

10:00 A.M. – AdU (1-0) vs. UP (2-0)
