Sports personalities and athletes made their presence felt last Sunday night at the Big Dome for the 2015 Binibining Pilipinas coronation.
Fencer and national team member Mia Allyson Howell and former junior tennis standout 26-year-old Anja-Vanessa Peter kicked off their sports shoes in exchange for high heels, wore their elegant long gowns, flaunted their curves in two-piece swimsuits, gave their widest smiles and walked with poise and grace in an attempt to serve the country in a different avenue against 32 other beautiful candidates.
The Fil-German 5-foot-9 Peter from Antipolo, Rizal made it to the Top 15 and did impress in her answer to judge and model Sarah Meier's question: “What do you believe is God’s greatest gift to women?”
She answered: “God’s greatest gift to women is bearing a child because I think giving birth to a kid is such a wonderful thing. Giving birth to life is such a wonderful thing. You can share your love and raise a child into something wonderful.”
Unfortunately, Peter, who donned the national color in the 2005 Manila Southeast Asian Games, was beaten by favorite and Miss Universe-Philippines winner Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, Janicel Lubina (International), Rogelie Catacutan (Supranational), Christi Lynn McGarry (Intercontinental) and Ann Lorraine Colis (Tourism) and runner ups Hanna Sison (1st) and Kimverlyn Suiza (2nd).
Howell, who was part of the PHI team that won silver in the Women’s Team Foil event in the 2007 Thailand SEAG, failed to make the Top 15 cut.
Season 77 UAAP men’s basketball Most Valuable Player Kiefer Ravena of the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles was also part of the pageant as one of the judges and was picked to ask Baguio candidate Kylie Versoza.
ABS-CBN Sports contributor and Ateneo courtside reporter Laura Lehmann, who was last year’s 1st runner up also went up the stage to pass the baton to Sison.
Also the 25-year-old Wurtzbach, a Kapamilya actress, may not be an athlete but she did capture the heart of the most popular football player in the country and Philippine Azkals ace striker Phil Younghusband.
The two are dating according to a report from TV Patrol.
