The title defense of the New England Patriots will have to begin without its future Hall of Famer quarterback after the National Football League (NFL) announced on Monday (Tuesday in the Philippines) that it has suspended Tom Brady for four games.
Brady will have to sit out New England’s first four weeks after the league found “substantial and credible evidence” of his role in deflating footballs used in the American Football Conference Championship Game – also known as the contest that sends its winner into the Superbowl.
“Each player, no matter how accomplished and otherwise respected, has an obligation to comply with the rules and must be held accountable for his actions when those rules are violated and the public’s confidence in the game is called into question,” NFL executive vice president for football operations Troy Vincent said.
The Patriots were also fined $1 million and will lose its 2016 first-round and 2017 fourth-round draft picks as part of the penalty. In a statement, the defending champions reacted, “Despite our conviction that there was no tampering with footballs, it was our intention to accept any discipline levied by the league. Today’s punishment, however, far exceeded any reasonable expectation.”
Without its future Hall of Famer, New England will turn over the keys of its offense to sophomore Jimmy Garoppolo.
