A fire that reached second alarm hurriedly forced student-athletes from the University of the Philippines to get packing and vacate the premises.
The Alumni Center, a building beside the Bahay ng Alumni and behind the Office for Alumni Relations, was at the center of the fire that broke out shortly before midnight on Tuesday. As such, around 50 Fighting Maroons, who are housed in the nearby Alumni Hostel, had to move away from their dormitory and into the Kalayaan Residence Hall, also in campus.
The fire was quickly put out at 12:36 AM on Wednesday. According to the Bureau of Fire Protection chief Jesus Rudy Fernandez, a short circuit may have caused the fire.
The displaced student-athletes were reported to be doing fine and their belongings in the dormitory to be secure. As per Alumni Relations director Wendell Capili, “The hostel did not burn. Nobody was injured during the fire.”
The same cannot be said for another historical landmark in Diliman. For many years, the Alumni Center has been the venue of one of the more popular physical education classes in UP: duckpin bowling.
The fire that destroyed the Alumni Center comes more than two weeks after a separate fire razed CASAA food hall, one of Diliman’s iconic places to eat.
