23-year old Matt Stonie ended legendary competitive eater Joey “Jaws” Chestnut’s hopes for a ninth consecutive win in the July fourth hotdog eating contest at Nathan’s Famous in Coney Island, New York last Saturday, (Sunday, Manila time).
Stonie, who downed 62 hotdogs and buns, bested fellow Californian Chestnut by two at the final bell. Chestnut began strong, jumping off to an early lead, but Stonie slowly gained the advantage and eventually took home the Nathan’s Famous belt.
Tim “Eater X” Janus came in at third place, finishing at 35 hotdogs eaten.
The Nathan’s Famous hotdog eating contest is an annual Independence Day tradition in the United States starting in 1972 in Coney Island, Brooklyn New York.
Aside from Chestnut, another long-time champion of the annual eating contest is Japanese eating star Takeru Kobayashi, who held the title from 2001 to 2006.
