After claiming gold at the 2015 Singapore Southeast Asian Games, the Philippine Volcanoes have established themselves as the best rugby team in Southeast Asia. Now, they have their sights set on the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
With rugby making its return to the Olympics following a 91 year absence, there’s no better time than now for the Volcanoes to prove that they can hang with teams outside of Asia.
Before anything else however, the Volcanoes will need to qualify for Rio 2016, and to do that, they need at least make the top four at the Rugby Sevens Olympic qualifiers in Hong Kong this coming November.
“If we can assemble our top-12 players like we did for the SEA Games, we have every chance of doing well,” said Volcanoes team captain Jake Letts.
Before the qualifiers in November, the Volcanoes will go through a gauntlet of tournaments in three countries starting September!
