I feel better. I feel like I can do better in the next competition --- Michael Christian Martinez
Even with limited preparation time, Filipino ice skater Michael Christian Martinez is ready to carry the nation's pride anew in the U.S. International Figure Skating Classic in Utah.
Pitted against 17 other caliber ice performers, the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympian will compete in the men’s short program on September 17 before the schedule free skate the following day.
The 18-year-old Martinez has been practicing with several coaches since his Los Angeles arrival earlier this month.
“I'm kind of nervous to compete next week because I wasn't prepared for this competition but I'll do my best,” Martinez said.
The Pinoy pride is coming off successful international stints, winning gold medals in the Triglav Trophy in Slovenia and the Asian Open in Thailand just last month.
“I feel better. I feel like I can do better in the next competitions,” Martinez added. “But there's still a lot of things to improve on like choreography and jumps that need to be polished.”
Martinez is using this season to improve his world ranking to make the cut for a spot in the 2018 winter Olympic Games in South Korea.
