Filipina lifter Hidilyn Diaz will make her third consecutive Olympics appearance after formally qualifying for the Rio Summer Games next year.
The 24-year-old Diaz will accompany Filipino-American hurdler Eric Cray, who booked a ticket to the Games after hitting the Olympic qualifying mark at the Cayman Invitational Athletics Tournament last May 16, in Brazil carrying the national colors.
Diaz, who hailed from Zamboanga City, actually qualified for a slot in the Olympics last month after three bronze medal hauls in the International Weightlifting Federation World Championship in Houston, Texas but it was only last Monday that Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richie Garcia formally announced the good news.
Diaz, the country’s flag bearer in the 2012 London Games, took the bronze medals in snatch (96 kg), clean and jerk (117 kg) for a 213 total in women's 53-kg division behind Chen Xiaoting of China and Chinese Taipei's Hsu Shu-Ching.
In the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics, Diaz competed in the 58-kg category.
Diaz won three golds in the 2015 Asian Championships in Thailand last September.
