UAAP Athlete of the Year qualifies for Rio Olympics

Table tennis player Ian "Yan-yan" Lariba became the sixth Filipino to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics on Saturday.
Lariba, who led De La Salle University to the UAAP Season 78 Women's Table Tennis title and was named Most Valuable Player, defeated Lilis Indriani of Indonesia, 11-6, 11-2, 11-8, 11-5, in the women’s singles event of the 2016 ITTF-Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament on Saturday in Hong Kong to clinch the 11th and final Olympic berth.
The Cagayan de Oro native earlier lost to Orawan Paranang of Thailand, 11-6, 11-2, 11-4, 13-11, in Stage One of Southeast Asia bracket.
Lariba, who was named UAAP Season 77 Athelte of the Year, was relegated to Draw D in Stage Two of the competition where she swept Maha Faramarzi of Qatar, 11-5, 11-1, 11-7, 11-4, and outlasted Mahjobeh Omran of Iran, 11-6, 15-13, 11-8, 7-11, 10-12, 11-8.
The Management of Financial Instituions major eventually fell to Nanthana Komwong of Thailand to set up the match with Indriani.
Lariba will join Eric Cray of athletics, Rogen Ladon and Charly Suarez of boxing, Kirstie Elaine Alora of taekwondo and Hidilyn Diaz of weightlifting as the Filipino representatives to the quadrennial event in Rio.
