My target of course is to be able to win the gold medal there (Southeast Asian Games) --- Filipino figure skater Michael Christian Martinez
Filipino figure skater Michael Christian Martinez is looking forward to donning the national color once again and help the country’s cause in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics bet on Tuesday vowed to bring home the gold medal in the historic inclusion of the sport in the biennial meet to be held on August 19 to 31 next year.
“My target of course is to be able to win the gold medal there,” said the 19-year-old figure skater during the press conference of his series of ice skating camps.
“And of course to help my other fellow skaters, the Filipino athletes here that will be competing in the Southeast Asian Games will hopefully place there too,” added Martinez, the first figure skater in the region to compete in the Winter Olympics.
For the first time two winter sports, figure skating and ice hockey, were included in the 29th staging of the SEA Games.
Looking ahead, Martinez, who finished 19th overall in Sochi Games, said that this early he’s already gearing up for the next Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea with a series of trainings and tournaments abroad.
“I would say that I’m prepared for the next winter Olympics and we’ll see the results there,” said the 2015 Asian Figure Skating Championship gold medalist.
Martinez will be holding a 3-day camp on June 15 to 17 at the Mall of Asia and on June 30 to July 1 in SM Seaside City in Cebu. He’ll also have an ice show and a meet-and-greet on June 18 in SM Megamall and on July 2 in SM Seaside Cebu.
“I like to impart my knowledge to my fellow figure skaters here and new skaters here,” he said. “’Yun nga tuturuan ko sila ng mga basic stuff like edges, the spins, the jumps, the technique of the jumps and pretty much the program.”
