Ateneo de Manila dropped a sorry four-set match against Indonesia as the Blue Eagles were relegated to the bronze medal showdown with host Singapore.
Ateneo de Manila fell short of its bid to advance in the gold medal match, bowing down to the might of Indonesia, 20-25, 26-24, 25-27, 24-26, Friday to close the elimination round of the 18th ASEAN University Games men's volleyball competition at the National University of Singapore Sports and Recreation Hall 5 Friday.
The Blue Eagles finished the elims with a 2-2 win-loss record relegating the two-time UAAP champion to the bronze medal match with Singapore.
Josh Villanueva gave the Blue Eagles a chance to force a decider after scoring a kill block that tied the fourth set at 24. Indonesia scored on the next play and back-to-back UAAP Most Valuable Player Marck Espejo, who was having a good game, was denied on his attack as the Indons punched a gold medal match ticket against powerhouse Thailand.
Espejo tried to push the Blue Eagles to match lead in the third set tying the game at 24-all after a nip-and-tuck battle.
A service error by Rex Intal followed by an error at the service line by Indonesia knotted the set again at 25. The Indonesians scored in the next play and Espejo was called for a net touch after a spike to give the frame to their opponent.
Ateneo’s men’s and women’s will face the Singaporean squads in their respective bronze medal games on Saturday.
