Our Filipino athletes are definitely ready for the Olympics.
And they’re headed to Rio de Janeiro in style.
Aside from having the honor of representing the Philippines in the 2016 Rio Olympics, our 12 athletes will also get to sport the country's national attire at the ceremonial parade of athletes at the Maracaña Stadium.
Alongside over 200 nations’ athletes, the Filipinos’ white barongs will definitely stand out over the usual suit-and-tie offering of other countries.
The short-sleeved barongs will be worn over a specially-designed thermal undershirt for our athletes to withstand the relatively colder temperature in Rio, which could plummet to 6-8 degree celsius, says Joey Romasanta, chef de mission of the Philippine delegation.
Table tennis star and UAAP co-Athlete of the Year Ian Lariba will bear the flag for the Philippines.
Sporting the barongs with Lariba are the 11 other Filipino Olympians; Marestella Torres for women's long jump, Eric Cray for the men's 400-meter hurdles, Mary Joy Tabal for the women's marathon, Miguel Tabuena for golf, Hidyln Diaz and Nestor Colonia for weightlifting, Kristine Alora for taekwondo, and Jasmin Alkaldi and Jessie Lacuna for swimming, and boxers Ladon Rogen and Charly Suarez.
The 12-man delegation will leave for Brazil tonight, with time to train and get used to the weather conditions in Brazil, before the opening ceremonies on August 5 (August 6 in Manila).
