Olympic silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz gave her mother perhaps the best birthday present.
Diaz's mother Emelita celebrated her birthday on Sunday, August 7 and hours later her weightlifter daughter claimed the silver medal in the women's 53-kilogram division, Sunday afternoon (Monday morning in the Philippines).
"Nagpapasalamat po ako sa lahat na nagdasal, sumuporta, nakinig sa iyak ko sa training, sa mga kaibigan ko, sa strength and conditioning coach ko, sa nanay ko na birthday ngayon, Happy Birthday Mom," shared Diaz in an interview with ABS-CBN News' Dyan Castillejo.
Diaz, who hails from Zamboanga City, greeted her mother on Facebook before she won the silver and broke the Philippines' 20-year medal drought in the Olympic Games.
For years, Diaz's mother has gone to a shrine every weekend and prayed that she would find a way to succeed at the Rio Games.
Her devotion paid off.
"I dedicate this medal to my mother, it is her birthday today, (and) to the Philippines," Diaz said in an interview with the Associated Press. "We have been wanting this for 10 years, 20 years."
It's the third Olympics for Diaz. Her previous best was an 11th-place showing at Beijing in 2008.
"I have tried so hard," Diaz said. "I have stumbled many times. I wanted to quit, but now all of my sacrifices have paid off."
