Filipina weightlifter Hidiliyn Diaz brought joy to an entire nation Monday morning, after claming the silver medal in her weight division, and giving the Philippines its’ first medal in two decades.
Of course, the whole country was nothing short of elated with HIdilyn’s victory, including another athlete who knows a thing or two about making a nation proud.
Former eight-division world boxing champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, who went by the monicker “Ang Pamabansang Kamao” went on Instagram to congratulate the 25-year old lifter. “I’m so proud of you.” Pacquiao’s post read.
For years, Pacman was on top of the boxing world, bringing a nation together to tune in to his fights and celebrate his wins as a country.
Pacquiao's name was linked with the olympics after the former champion said that he'd like to represent the country in the summer games in Rio, but had to back out due to his duties as a senator. Instead, Pacquiao gave the Pinoy athletes an added incentive, promising a cool five million pesos to anyone who brings home a gold medal.
In her third olympics appearance, Diaz has now also indeed given the whole country another reason to be proud.
