The Philippines has been rejoicing all Monday as weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz won silver in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

And in the aftermath of her historic victory, the first medal since Onyok Velasco's silver 20 years ago, the country's top officials have sent their congratulations to the new Philippine sporting hero.

Vice President Leni Robredo issued a release saying that Diaz is an inspiration to every Filipino.

"Pinahanga mo kami sa iyong husay, pagsisikap at determinasyon sa gitna ng iyong mga pinagdaanang pagsubok," Robredo said.

"You serve as an inspiration to every Filipino and a reminder that no challenge is too heavy for a Filipina to overcome," she added.

Diaz won silver after carrying a total of 200 kilograms in the women's 53-kg category.

The three-time Olympian lifted 88 kilograms for her snatch attempt and then recorded 112 kilograms in the clean and jerk.
