"Para sa kanya talaga yung medalyang 'yon. It's a birthday gift for her."
Hidilyn Diaz, the 25-year old Olympic hero admitted that her efforts were all for her mother Emelita, who celebrated her birthday hours before she won the silver at the Rio Olympics.
With her whole country eagerly awaiting her return earlier today at the NAIA Terminal 3, Diaz got her warmest welcome through her parents.
She hung her Olympic medal on her weeping mother, then gave her an embrace.
Diaz broke the Philippines' 20-year drought in the Olympics after coming in second in the women's 53 kg category in weightlifting.
She became the only Filipino woman to ever bag hardware at the Olympics, breaking through the elite, previously all-male club called "The Great Eight".
Which shows just how much weight that silver medal really carries for Hidilyn, her parents, and to the Philippines.
