Pinay swimmer Alkhaldi bombs out of Rio Olympics qualifying

Swimmer Jasmine Alkhaldi is the seventh member of Team Philippines to receive an early boot in Rio Olympics.
RIO DE JANEIRO --- Swimmmer Jasmine Alkhaldi bombed out of the women’s 100m. freestyle, finishing third in heat 2 at the Olympic Aquatice Stadium here.
She clocked 56.30 seconds but not enough to qualify in the semifinals as she finished 33rd overall out of 46 entries. Alkhaldi also failed to shatter her personal-best of 55.94 seconds she registered last May in Arizona.
The 23-year old tanker ended the campaign of Filipino swimmers after Jessie Khing Lacuna also fell short in the 400m. freestyle event where he placed 46th overall.
Other Filipino athletes who have bowed out of the competition here are boxers Charly Suarez and Rogen Ladon, table tennis’ Ian Lariba, judoka Kodo Nakano and Nestor Colonia.
Still competing in the 13-athlete Team Philippines are golfer Miguel Tabuena who will compete from Aug. 11 to 14, marathoner Mary Joy Tabal who will race on Aug. 14, and long jumper Marestella Torres Sunang and 400m hurdles entry Eric Cray who will both see action on Aug. 16.
Taekwondo’s Kirstie Elaine Alora will be the last Filipino athlete to compete in this Summer Games, in the women’s +67 kg class on Aug. 20, which is the eve of the closing ceremony.
Silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz of weightlifting (53kg.) ended the country’s 2o-year medal drought and is expected to arrive this afternoon.
