14-year-old Juan Baniqued is poised for bigger and better things after Ironkids.
SUBIC BAY --- The beauty of events like the Alaska Ironkids is that there's an opportunity to find young stars in the making.
And this past weekend at the Remy Field here, Ironkids did just that.
Winning the 13-14 age group for a second straight year, 14-year-old Juan Baniqued finished his Ironkids career with a dominant run. When he was a couple of years younger, he of course competed in the 11-12 age category.
He won that too in back-to-back years.
He's poised for bigger and better things after Ironkids.
Before that however, Baniqued, who won the 2017 edition of the race in a photo finish, is bound to put in the work.
"Next two weeks I have [another] competition. I'm still gonna continue training," he said.
Asked what he needs to work on, the young triathlete basically said everything. He does not have a soft spot for the bike portion though and it was evident, he gave up three seconds in that leg of the race before recovering in the run.
"I'm very comfortable at swimming and running. Bike, not too much," Baniqued said.
"I think I need more training, harder training, for upcoming races," he added.
