A more bulked up Michael Martinez flew to Helsinki, Finland last Tuesday to compete at the 2017 World Figure Skating Championships, hoping to qualify for a spot in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Currently ranked 37th in the world, the Parañaque native says he's ready to reach for an even better finish in the upcoming world championships, aiming to break through the top 10.
"I'm really excited to compete for the next world championships also because it's the next qualifying event for the olympics, I feel really ready for it," Martinez said, "The top 24 will be picked in the next Olympics. Hopefully top 10. Top 10 in the next world championship."
Martinez, then nearly 16 years old, wowed the world at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia where he finished 19th.
Now at 20 years old, Martinez is no longer the scrawny prodigy he was at Sochi, as proved by photos of him, all bulked up, which went viral earlier this year.
He revealed that he bulked up to help ward off injury and to better execute his choreography on ice.
"I didn't really see it was going to get that much attention because I felt like really on my skating part, it help me a lot to reduce injuries and help me to perform better," Martinez explained.
