The Philippine National Police athletes left an impressive mark at the World Police and Fire Games, bringing home a total of 20 medals from the biennial meet held in Los Angeles, California.

Filipino contingents won nine golds, six silvers and five bronze medals throughout the 10-day competition, which brought together nine thousand law enforcers from 67 countries including 80 members of the Philippines’ finest.

The Philippines’ two final gold medals came courtesy of the PNP women’s beach volleyball team, featuring 2017 Beach Volleyball Republic national champions PO1 Lourdilyn Catubag and PO1 Karen Kay Quilario.

The officers from PNP’s Davao Regional Office faced taller competition against the towers of Brazil, Canada, and Russia, but they eventually prevailed to take the highest honor.

“Sobrang saya, hindi namin akala mananalo kami kasi maraming kalaban,” said Catubag,

“Lalo na ibang country, matatangkad. Hindi namin inexpect na makuha namin Yung gold,” Quilario chimed.

The win moves the officers closer to dream of inspiring youth to stay off drugs.

“Para po sa amin, naglalaro kami to promote No to Drugs," Catubag said, “Wag po talaga gumamit ng droga tapos play your sports rather than using drugs.

Other big winners from the PNP include the representatives for taekwondo, badminton, karate, and boxing, to add the the Philippines’ medal tally.

Adding to the quality of their wins, most of the medalists are first-time competitors in the event. The PNP athletes now look forward to defending their titles in 2019, when the World Police and Fire Games head to Chengdu, China.
