The Philippine Army Rifle team went off to a strong start at the ASEAN Armies Rifle Meet 2017 in Singapore, winning a gold and a bronze medal in the opening carbine matches.
Staff Sgt. Angelo Bonagua clinched the first gold for the country in the second group match of the Carbine category, besting opponents from Indonesia and Thailand.
In a prior match, the Philippines settled for bronze in the first group match of the same category, with Staff Sgt. Bonagua yielding to ace Indonesian rifleman Chief Pvt. Zulkarnain Amrullah and Thailand's 2nd Lt. Yuttana Nimnua.
Finishing third last year, the Philippine delegation aims to better their third-place finish, which ended with a 23-gold, 22-silver, and 26-bronze medal haul behind Indonesia and Thailand.
The Indonesians took home the plum last year, finishing with 44 golds, 35 silvers, and 30 bronze medals. Thailand meanwhile bagged 19 golds, 36 silvers, and 18 bronze medals.
