Figure skater Michael Martinez is ecstatic on his return to the Winter Olympics.
Olympic figure skater Michael Martinez is back in his quest for Olympic glory, taking the place of a skater from Sweden, who withdrew in the event of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea next month.
The 21-year old previously fell short by a spot as he finished 8th in the Nebelhorn Trophy in Germany last year, wherein the top 7 would qualify for the quadriennial event. Martinez was named the alternate by virtue of his finish, for situations exactly like this.
Despite the circumstances that favored him, Martinez is "extremely happy" about the recent developments.
"I saw the message from the federation, they were like Michael you’re in. They sent me screencaps of the email saying ISU emailed us that you’re in and I’m like no way so like I rushed in the rink and told me coach, were in we were all super happy about it," Martinez told ABS-CBN News' Steve Angeles in an interview.
Martinez added that he anticipated his addition upon receiving news of the withdrawal.
Meanwhile, the two-time Olympian also thanked his family and friends for their prayers and support.
"I’m very very thankful for everybody for all the prayers and the support they’ve given to me. Especially my grandma, my family, my closest friends, they were praying for me so hard to get in and like now you know I’m very thankful because now I’m in and I’m super thankful for everything."
H/T to Steve Angeles for the report.
