The Must-See Sports Events in Early 2018
The Premier Volleyball League returns in April!
Sports fans will have a lot to cheer for since there’s no shortage of must-see sports events in early 2018. Here’s a few that will really satisfy your craving for sweet, athletic competition.
UAAP Season 80 Volleyball
The long wait is over—the Season 80 Volleyball just commenced on Feb. 3 , with the De La Salle Lady Spikers opening its quest for a three-peat against UST. Season 79 was Kim Fajardo’s last one in the uniform, but DLSU’s artillery remains as deadly as ever, with last year’s Finals MVP Desiree Cheng, Kianna Dy, and Asia’s 2nd Best Libero Dawn Macandili still on the roster. Will they score a third three-peat? Or will another university spoil their shot at history?

The complete pool of All-Stars has been revealed. Team captains LeBron James and Steph Curry have already drafted their guys. LBJ reunites with Kyrie Irving. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook will play together one more time on James’ squad. Another duo to watch out for on that team is New Orleans’ twin towers Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins. Meanwhile, Curry drafted two of his Golden State teammates Draymond Green and Klay Thompson, and they’ll play with the beasts from the East Giannis Antetokounmpo and Joel Embiid. Curry will also have some of the West’s elite guards in James Harden, Jimmy Butler, and Damian Lillard. This is certainly shaping up to be the most exciting All-Star Game in years.
The Second Season of PVL
The Premier Volleyball League (PVL) debuted in 2017 and it has already made a huge impact in the sport. The BaliPure Purest Water Defenders won the inaugural Open Conferences, while the NU Lady Bulldogs triumphed in the Collegiate Conference. And prior to the opening of the second season, the field is undergoing a major shakeup. Creamline has beefed up its lineup with the acquisitions of Michele Gumabao and Melissa Gohing, who’ll be joining Alyssa Valdez.
The 2018 PVL Reinforced Conference starts this April.
Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers
The Philippine men’s national team continues its campaign in the 2019 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers this year. Gilas returns to action on Feb. 22 for the start of the second leg of the qualifiers when they take on Australia in Melbourne. On Feb. 25, they’ll go head-to-head against Japan at the MOA Arena. There will be more games come July, so it certainly won’t be an easy road for the men’s basketball team.
The only way to make must-see sporting events more fun and exciting is to make it sweeter—watch games with fellow fans and with a San Miguel Flavored Beer in hand! It comes in Lemon and Apple flavors and has just the right amount of sweetness, making San Miguel Flavored Beer the perfect barkada drink for a seriously fun night of watching games together. Don’t go overboard with the celebration, though; remember to drink in moderation—always.
