Asian Games: Jordan Clarkson leads way for Team PH at opening ceremonies

Philippine Team on parade headed by Jordan Clarkson as the Flag carrier during the opening of the 2018 Asian Games at the Gelora Bung Karno(GBK) Sports Complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta the biggest in Indonesia were 17,000 athletes from 45 countries including the Philippines will compete in the games, the place will also host numerous sports events.
JAKARTA — Clad in well-tailored barong Tagalogs and wearing sneakers, members of the Philippine delegation made their way to the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on a warm Saturday night in this capital city of Indonesia, where the 2018 Asian Games officially opened.
Leading the way for Team Philippines was Jordan Clarkson the Filipino NBA player born in the US.
The Cleveland Cavaliers guard appeared comfortable with his barong’s sleeves rolled up and his jeans cut off at the calf.
“I’m very excited,” Clarkson had said ahead of the opening ceremonies. “I’m excited for the ceremony and everything.”
Philippine chef-de-mission Richard Gomez had endorsed Clarkson as flag-bearer, calling him a good role model who will inspire the Filipino athletes.
Some Philippine teams, however, opted not to attend the opening ceremony so as to focus on their own campaigns in the Asiad.
“Hindi na kami a-attend ng opening,” confirmed women’s volleyball coach Shaq delos Santos, whose wards will take on powerhouse Thailand in their first game on Sunday, past noon local time.
A total of 272 athletes will represent the Philippines in these Games.
