Filipino athletes occupy a difficult place in the nation.
They are heroes in victory, but often overlooked are the sacrifices they have to go through to bring pride to the nation.
Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, a Olympic silver medalist back in 2016 and most recently, a gold medalist in the 2018 Asian Games, has long been critical of the government's support, or lack thereof, for its athletes.
In an open letter posted on social media, Diaz bared her thoughts on being an athlete waiting for support from the local government after earning the Philippines' lone gold medal in the Asiad last August 21.
"Atleta lang!" the letter stated.
"Atleta lang sa taong nasa mataas na posisyon ng Philippine Sports, yang ang ang narinig," Diaz continued, revealing an unfair comment she must have heard along her journey.
Count on her to turn things around, however, as she proudly owns up to being an athlete.
"Ako'y nagbigay ng karangalan sa bansa dahil ako'y atleta lang," she concluded.
The 27-year-old lifter from Zamboanga continues to be a shining beacon for Pinoy athletes, not just through action, but also through her words.
