JAKARTA --- Behind the force that drives the Philippine campaign in the 18th Asian Games in both Palembang and Jakarta are the men and women who make sure the needs of the Filipino athletes are well taken care of.
Led by Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez as Chef de Mission, the members of the Philippine secretariat practically eat (when able), sleep (less), cry (more) and celebrate (rabidly) with the Filipino athletes.
Call them the unsung heroes, who takes care of the athletes’ needs from transportation to food to their laundry to basically everything.
“We work from the background and we’re happy to serve our athletes, “ said Gomez, also the president of the Philippine Fencing Association.
The secretariat is a combined work force from the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
They arrived in Jakarta and Palembang some 10 days before the Games and are bound to fly home four days after the urn is extinguished.
