Following Margielyn Didal's gold-medal win at the skateboarding event in the 2018 Asian Games in Palembang, Indonesia, her local government unit decided to congratulate her by pledging to build a skate park in Cebu City.
Mayor Tommy Osmeña of Cebu City, known as a very active local government chief on social media, announced that the city government will be building the facility in the South Road Property area, a 300-hectare area of reclaimed land in the southern part of the city.
The mayor added that Didal, a who hails from Lahug, is very much welcome to give ideas to the proposed park so that skaters like her will finally have a proper and safe skating ground, free from the perils of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Didal, who was also the lone representative of the country in the 2018 Street League Skateboarding PRO Open in London earlier this year, finished fourth without having a proper training ground in the country.
After her win, she bared that she had to endure the stigma from law enforcement while roaming through the streets.
"Sa streets lang, hinahabol kami ng pulis, mga security pag may nakitang nag-skate," Didal told ABS-CBN News' Dyan Castillejo via video interview.
"Minsan po pag nasa mall, pag nakahawak ka ng board, bawal ka pumasok," she continued. “Gusto ko rin na maipakita na skateboarding is a serious sport but can also be fun as well.”
With the win, Didal hopes that the sport can now be taken seriously and remove the negative connotation of skaters as thugs or troublemakers.
"[Para] sa skate scene sa 'Pinas, manibago naman yung tingin ng ibang tao sa skateboarding," an emotional Didal bared.
