Filipino-Japanese judoka Kiyomi Watanabe suffered another stinging loss from bitter rival Nami Nabekura of Japan to fall short in the 2018 Asian Games women's judo -63 kgs. gold medal match Thursday night.
Hopes were high for Watanabe to deliver the country’s fifth gold medal but the reigning back-to-back Grand Prix champion and former world junior titlist spoiled everything for the Filipina as Nabekura nabbed the mint with a 3:21 win via ippon.
Watanabe pocketed the country’s first silver in the quadrennial meet.
Nabekura bested Watanabe last month in the semifinals of the Zagreb Grand Prix in Croatia and in the quarterfinals of the IJF world masters in St. Petersburg, Russia December last year.
The Philippines’ gold medal haul came from weightlifter and Rio Olympian Hidilyn Diaz, two from women’s golf and from female skateboarder Margielyn Didal.
