POC Board finalizes vacant spots to be filled in election
No more [resignations] because the deadline was last Friday and all the letters of resignation were forwarded to the IOC/OCA, so only four [positions will be filled up] -- POC Board member Roberto Mananquil

Only four positions will be filled up in the scheduled Philippine Olympic Committee election later this month.

In the special meeting held on Monday at the POC headquarters in Pasig, the POC Board finalized that only the positions of president, chairman and two board members will be voted for in the July 28 election.

“[That is] based on the letter of resignations submitted to the Executive Board,” said board member Roberto Mananquil.

Mananquil was joined by 1st vice president Joey Romasanta, 2nd vice president Jeff Tamayo, auditor Jonne Go, International Olympic Committee representative to the Philippines Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski and board members Cong. Prospero Pichay and Julian Camacho, via teleconference in China, in the meeting.

Resigned officials Ricky Vargas (president), Abraham ‘Bambol’ Tolentino (chairman) and board members Clint Aranas and Cynthia Carreon were barred to attend the meeting according to the IOC’s directive. Also asked to abstain from the meeting were secretary general Pato Gregorio, who was appointed by Vargas during his term, and Charlie Ho, who the Board named as Gregorio’s replacement following the resignation of Vargas last month.

Mananquil said that the Board had already forwarded all the written resignations of the officers who stepped down to the IOC/OCA and that questions regarding the officers who expressed their intent to resign verbally in a meeting two weeks ago but have not put their resignation in writing will not be entertained.

“No more [resignations] because the deadline was last Friday and all the letters of resignation were forwarded to the IOC/OCA, so only four [positions will be filled up],” said Mananquil.

The Board also came up with two resolutions in the meeting – the creation of an independent election committee and the call for the extraordinary general assembly (EGA) on July 18 leading to the election.

The Board nominated as part of the election committee former Comelec Commissioner Rene Sarmiento as chair, Fr. Victor Calvo, O.P. of Letran and a representative from the Philippine Dispute Resolution Center, Inc.

The extraordinary general assembly will be held at 11:00 at the Kamagong Room of the Manila Golf and Country Club.

“The said resolutions and creation of the election committee, all of these will be ratified in the July 18 extraordinary general assembly,” said Mananquil.

Those who want to run for the said positions will be named during the EGA and their qualifications will be scrutinized by the election committee.

An IOC/OCA representative will be present during the EGA and the election, where 43 national sports association heads, two athletes’ commission representatives and an IOC representative to the Philippines will cast their votes.
