Olympian Hidilyn Diaz copped the bronze medal in the 2019 International Weightlifting Federation World Championships in Pattaya, Thailand on Friday.
The Rio Olympics silver medalist shrugged off a subpar performance in snatch as she recovered in the clean and jerk, lifting 121 kilograms that was good for third spot before tallying 214 kilograms overall to pocket the women’s 55kg. division bronze medal.
Diaz, the 2018 Asian Games gold medalist, lifted only 93 kgs. in snatch, good for only eighth place.
“Ikaw yun Lord. Grabe. Nun na-mental block na ako, wala na ang 93 kgs. pero ginabayan mo ako Lord. Sobrang blessed ko sa’yo,” posted the 28-year old Diaz, who also had podium finishes in the 2015 and 2017 editions of the world championship, on her Twitter account.
China’s Liao Qiuyun took the top podium finish with a total of 227 kgs. (98 kgs. snatch, 129 kgs. clean and jerk) while compatriot Zhang Wanqiong bagged the silver medal with a total lift of 222 kgs. (99 kgs. snatch, 123 clean and jerk).
Diaz’s feat kept her on the right track for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and built momentum as she prepares to make a good showing in the 30th Southeast Asian Games in Manila in November.
