Impressive performances in Day 2 of Guiuan Odyssey Waves
La Union's Jefferson Dela Torre floats off the lip during his heat in the 9th Guiuan Odyssey Waves.

Calicoan Island, Guiuan — The second day of the 9th Guiuan Odyssey Waves opened with Round 2 of the Men’s Open Shortboard. Thursday’s top performer, Edwin Uriarte from Pacifico, Siargao Island again ruled the second round with the highest total heat score of 10.50.

His hard work paid off as he showed prowess on Calicoan’s left-breaking waves.

“I try to remain calm and be patient,” explained the goofy-footer. “Patience is a good strategy,” Uriarte added. The 18-year-old goofy-footer is undoubtedly one to watch out for when he competes against the seeded surfers in Round 4.

Meanwhile, it was the women’s turn to ride the waves as the competition headed immediately into the quarterfinals of the Women’s Open Shortboard.

Up and coming wahine Vea Estrellado from Gubat, Sorsogon surprised everyone with her skills and adept wave-reading ability with the conditions this on Thursday.

The fifteen-year-old first joined the Philippine Surfing Championship Tour (PSCT) back in 2017 in San Juan, La Union and won second place in the 2017 Reef Pro La Union. Stopping for a year due to financial constraints, Estrellado is back on tour and is hungry to score.

“I was a bit scared going into my heat because I was up with the likes of veteran surfers like Daisy Valdez of La Union,” says Estrellado. The unassuming wahine was surprised to learn that she got the highest heat and single-wave scores of that round.

“It’s my dream to make it to the Philippine Team,” beamed the shy Estrellado when asked about her plans for the future. To those who have seen her perform in other surfing competitions, Estrellado is the surfer to watch out for in the coming seasons.

After taking a quick break, the competition resumed midday with the offshore wind favouring the competition causing the waves to become cleaner—perfect for continuing with the Men’s Open Shortboard. Round 3 proved to be exciting as top surfers were seeded together with those who advanced from previous rounds.

The last heat of Round 3 had Siargaonons John Mark Tokong and PJ Alipayo versus La Union boys Marven Abat and Francisco Nunag. Towards the end of the heat, it was clear that Tokong claimed first place with Abat in second, showing us impressive backside maneuvers.

Fresh from his win in the recent 25th Siargao Surfing Cup, a WSL QS-1500 event, John Mark “Marama” Tokong posted the highest total heat score of 14.25 points and single-wave score of 8.25 points.

Excitement is building up for the third day of the 9th Guiuan Odyssey Waves surfing competition. More surprises from the Philippines’ best surfers are expected in the coming days.

The 9th Guiuan Odyssey Waves is made possible by the local government unit of Guiuan thru Mayor Annaliza P. Gonzales-Kwan, Vice Mayor Veronica Cabacaba- Ramirez, the Sangguniang Bayan Members and the Department of Tourism Region 8.
